Public relations (PR) is the practice of deliberately managing the release and spread of information between an individual or an organization (such as a business, government agency, or a nonprofit organization) and the public.

Public relations is a key part of conflict resolution, crisis management and maintaining a positive relationship with stakeholders. PR is one of those areas of communication that is just a good competency for every person to possess, regardless if you work for the PR department of a larger organization.

Relationships still matter, but public relations professionals must accept that there are now myriad and often more effective ways to reach audiences outside of calling a journalist. It is no longer enough to simply place an article. That placement must be supplemented with a strategy to elevate it above the noise in our crowded social media ecosystem.
