Situational awareness, self-knowledge and remaining highly informed are what make up survival intelligence, which is the ability to enable yourself and those around you to stay alive for as long as possible. Survival intelligence does not just refer to crisis situations, it also refers to practicalities of day-to-day life and making the best decisions about how to safely exist in our everyday lives.

Prevention is a huge part of public health and this module started its life by being an expansion on the brilliant book, The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life.

The Survivors Club really opened my eyes to how fragile human beings can be under the wrong set of circumstances. However, The Survivors Club also showed me how hugely resilient human beings can be in dire situations, especially when they possess the right resolve and know-how.

Just because something bad has not happened to you, it does not mean that it will never happen to you. And even if something bad does happen to you, it does not mean that it must stay that way.

Be smart and you’re more likely to be safe.

No matter the adversity, the navy says, survival is a mentality, a way of thinking. Survival is also a lens, a way of perceiving the world around you. The best survivors in the military share a constant outlook and approach, which they believe can also be applied to the struggles of everyday life. They understand that crisis is inevitable and they anticipate adversity. When they face a challenge, they observe and analyze the situation, devise a plan, and move decisively. If things go wrong, they adapt and improvise. If they get overwhelmed, they recover quickly. They also know how to wait for the worse to end. Understanding that even misfortune gets tired and needs a break, the’re able to hold back, identify the right moment, and then do what they need to do.
