“The name of the game is maximizing option value by actively seeking out opportunities — lateral and diagonal moves along with upward movement — that allow you to acquire more skills, experience new experiences, and expand your networks (don’t forget that networks flow sideways and down as well as up), to open multiple career paths for you not just now but at every step forward. Ask yourself what actions you can take to create more alternative futures for yourself — and greater value for your organization?
Play an active role in directing your own career journey, treating skills, experiences and capabilities as brand-building assets. Mark yourself to market by taking inventory of your skills, experiences and capabilities, valuing their market relevance, and positioning all as a portfolio to create a consistent and compelling impression.“
Cathy Benko, A To-Do List for the CEO of Your Career, Harvard Business Review, hrb.org, 13/12/2010
Career brand management is a strategic approach towards creating, managing, and communicating a strong career brand for professional growth and career success.
This module is made up off and named after the Coursera MOOC specialization, Career Brand Management, and it was a complete game changer for me.
I encountered it about half-way through the study period of my Master’s and it was exactly what I needed to focus the various concentrations of my MTA Portfolio and the overall direction of my career development.
The job market has drastically changed in the last two decades. People are changing jobs more often and this means you not only have to put a great deal of effort into managing your employability, but it also means you have to think strategically with your career development because the job market is more competitive and less secure.
Ultimately, this module ended up producing Career Brand Ecosystem final project for my Information Management and Career Development concentration.
