People with an ‘incremental’ theory of intelligence – believing that intelligence is malleable and can be increased through effort – are much more intellectually ambitious and successful. The lesson is that parents, teachers, and students must take the long and incremental view. Regardless of whether a child seems to be exceptional, mediocre, or even awful at any particular skill at a particular point in time, the potential exists for that person to develop into a high-achieving adult.

David Shenk, The Genius in All of Us: Why Everything You’ve Been Told About Genetics, Talent and Intelligence is Wrong, 2011:83

Learning is only one half of the education process and if you don’t understand teaching as well, you can’t really understand how education works or how you can make it work better.

This module is a deep dive into the different techniques of teaching. I never had any desire to become a teacher, I just wanted to understand the education process better and work out where it had let me down before.

Not only has teaching enabled me to become a better self-taught student, but it has made me into a better educator for coaching others to improve their learning.

Ultimately, if you can’t teach what you’ve learned, then you have not successfully learned anything.
