“The artful leader is attuned to the subtle undercurrents of emotions that pervade a group, and can read the impact of her own actions on those currents. One way leaders establish their credibility is by sensing these collective, unspoken feelings and articulayting them for the group, or acting in a way that tacitly shows they are understood. In this sense, the leader is a mirror, reflecting back to the group its own experience.
However, the leader is also a key source of the organization’s emotional tone. The excitement emanating from a leader canmove an entire group in that direction. This transmition of emotional energy lets leaders be the pilots of an organization, setting its course and direction.“
Daniel Goleman, Working with Emotional Intelligence, 1998:185
Leadership is the art of motivating a collective to act towards achieving a common goal, but it is also the art of motivating yourself toward achieving a desired goal.
Individuals and communities thrive at their finest when their leadership utilises the practices of positive psychology, a scientific field examining the strengths that empowers individuals and communities to flourish.
When I started my postgraduate studies, I became increasingly interested in emotional and social intelligence, thanks to the many articles I had read on the subject and the masterful books written by Daniel Goleman. I knew I wanted to improve my own emotional and social intelligence, which led me to the field of positive psychology and finally all the way back found to leadership, which I always knew would form a focus of my MTA Portfolio.
This module is primarily made up of two Coursera MOOC specializations that it is named after. Both Inspired Leadership and Positive Psychology were heavily practical specializations in which I had to complete several personal and professional assignments throughout.
These assignments were instrumental in sharpening my ability to self-coach myself and they also ignited my life coaching side business, which ended up being the final project of my Leadership and Management concentration.
