Coping with Changes: Social-Emotional Learning Through Play
“Whether or not there is a class explicitly devoted to emotional literacy may matter far less than how these lessons are taught. There is perhaps no subject where the quality of the teacher matters so much, since how a teacher handles her class is in itself a model, a de facto lesson in emotional competence – or lack thereof. Whenever a teacher responds to one student, twenty or thirty others learn a lesson.“
Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Matters More Than IQ, 1996:279
When you teach students how to manage their emotions and social relations, not only do those students maintain a better psychological wellbeing that is more conducive for successful learning, but it also has a positive knock-on effect that benefits the people around those students. Everyone wins with social and emotional learning.
Social and emotional learning is most definitely one of the crucial life skills that was missing from the curriculum of my schooling days. It also something I desperately needed as a child.
I witnessed a messy break up of my family at an early age that made me very withdrawn and its one of the reasons I fell behind in my traditional formal education. I always viewed the schooling environment as a very cold and unwelcoming place, so I disengaged intellectually and emotionally from it.
Having now filled in that huge gaping hole in my education thanks to the positive psychology learning I did as part of my Leadership and Management concentration, I can attest to the overriding benefit that comes from being very emotionally and socially intelligent.
This module exists because I wanted to take my positive psychology learning and investigate ways in which it can be applied in a formal schooling environment.
