“Cultural intelligence is related to emotional intelligence, but it goes a step further. People with high emotional intelligence can pick up on the emotions, wants, and needs of others. Those with high cultural intelligence are attuned to the values, beliefs, attitudes, and body language of people from different cultures; and they use this knowledge to interact with empathy and understanding.
People with high cultural intelligence are not experts in every culture; rather, they use observation, empathy, and intelligence to read people and situations, and to make informed decisions about why others are acting as they are.
They also use cultural intelligence to monitor their own actions. Instead of making quick judgments or relying on stereotypes, they observe what is happening, and they adapt their own behavior accordingly.“
Cultural Intelligence: Working Confidently in Different Cultures, Mindtools.com
In a multicultural world, being a cultured individual with a strong ability for cross-cultural communication is a no-brainer.
It was very natural for me to develop my cultural intelligence because I built my MTA Portfolio in the City of Bristol, which is one of the UK’s more multicultural and diverse places to live.
Cultural intelligence is about developing the ability to quicky notice the various social cues of a diverse cultural context and then readjust your own thinking and behaviour to be respectful towards the customs of that different cultural context; while also conveying the perspective of your own native culture in a diplomatic fashion.
However, cultural intelligence does not just refer to different cultures from different countries, it more precisely refers to different cultures from/in different contexts.
You have different work cultures, different family cultures, different community cultures, different learning cultures, different religious cultures, so on and so forth.
