“All too often, the poor and the middle class allow the power of money to control them. By simply getting up and working harder, failing to ask themselves if what they do makes sense, they shoot themselves in the foot as they leave for work every morning. By not fully understanding money, the vast majority of people allow its awesome power the control them.“
Robert T. Kiyosaki, Rich Dad Poor Dad, 2012:76
“Finance has always been seen as having two distinct functions: recording what has happened (financial accounting) and helping firms to make decisions about the future (management accounting). Today, it has a third function: financial strategy. This incorporates judgements about risk, which some firms (especially banks) have realized must play a larger part in financial decision-making.“
The Business Book, 2014:118
Personal finance and business finance are very much the same thing. The lifestyle of a single person or family unit has accounting and financial concerns just like any other business, they are just on a smaller scale.
It goes without saying that a knowledgeable and disciplined approach to financial management is the difference between struggling in poverty or capitalizing in prosperity.
I always approached the study of organizational financial management with the view of improving my personal financial management. As with many other aspects of my MTA Portfolio, this module gave me an opportunity to make up for the lack of financial management training I received in my formal education.
Ultimately, gaining a solid understanding in personal finance has allowed me to get to grips with the larger demands of business administration finance.
