“We might observe here that the Great Work of a people is the work of all people. No one is exempt. Each of us has our individual life pattern and responsibilities. Yet beyond these concerns each person in and through their personal work assists in the Great Work. Personal work needs to be aligned with the Great Work.
We cannot doubt that we too have been given the intellectual vision, the spiritual insight, and even the physical resources we need for carrying out the transition that is demanded of these times, transition from the period when humans were a disruptive force on the planet Earth to the period when humans become present to the planet in a manner that is mutually enhancing.“
Thomas Berry, The Great Work: Our Way Into The Future, 1999:10-11
Solving complex problems is a process that calls on different and sometimes competing methods to solve complex, a.k.a. ‘wicked’, problems that are quite often hard to define, can be approached from different perspectives and can also have multiple solutions.
This module is made up of the Solving Complex Problems specialization on Coursera. The specialization is being transdisciplinary in nature and, being applicable to all the concentrations of my MTA Portfolio, it moved around my portfolio quite a bit until it finally found its home within Environmental Sustainability.
While there are many great works of our time, as represented in the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, I think by far the most important goals, and the ones through which we should build to solve all the other goals, are the goals to solve the climate crisis.
The climate crisis is a hugely complex problem that is going to require a great deal of systems thinking.
The health and wellbeing of the natural world determines the health and wellbeing of every human living on it.
I believe solving the climate crisis is the greatest work of our time.
